Tune of the Week for 03/30/09 -- Dokken, Standing on the Outside

Hey folks, how's it going? I've been having some amusement with Miles' Twitter page as of late. Man, it's amazing what people will find funny when it's coming from a cat. Were I to say the same things as me, nobody would listen. Human nature is a very strange thing.

The thing I can't get over about Twitter is the undeniable sense that I'm back in high school. Talk about adolescence in your adulthood. We dropped our business site's Twitter page because we just couldn't take the whole, "Follow me, I'll 'retweet' you and make you feel accepted by someone you don't know and who might not even exist," crap. All the cliquey, immature stupidity was actually stressing me out. I was able to let it all go, though, by becoming our cat. He's hilarious!

Well, this week I'm actually posting a real tune. It's from a CD I got from Heather for Christmas.

I can't say that I'm a huge fan of Dokken. I've heard all or most of their past work, and I've never been terribly impressed. I'm about as excited about most of their music as I am about, say, Extreme.

However, this recording is quite good. It received a number of positive reviews when it came out, and I like most of it. It's definitely a good listen for long-distance driving. And Heather enjoys it fine, as she does with most anything that smacks of 80s hair metal.

In case you like Dokken, you might find it funny that Strong Bad mentions them in one of his emails. Enjoy the tune, folks. See ya.

Ohhh man, I was big into Dokken back in high school. "Back for the Attack" was my favorite album. Killer stuff. A certain "drummer friend" was an even bigger fan, and we'd jam to them quite a bit. I don't have the new album, but this song isn't half bad. I almost didn't recognize Don's vocals at first. I've read some pretty favorable reviews too.

It's funny that you mentioned Extreme as well... Dokken and Extreme were two bands that were always incorrectly lumped in with the glam or hair band scenes. They're two of my favorites.

I don't know how anybody couldn't lump Dokken into the 80s hair metal genre. Their old sound is just like Def Leppard, as far as I'm concerned. And although Extreme was not an 80s hair metal group, their first album sure tried to make them LOOK like one.

Admittedly, I enjoyed Van Halen III with Gary Cherone, and Nuno Bettencourt has got to be one of the most underrated guitarists ever. He gets no props anywhere that I can tell, and he's awesome. My blog comments were primarily about their radio ballads, although they couldn't help that the radio overplayed them the way they did.

Plus, Extreme's latest CD is pretty good, as well. I've heard a few off of it, and I almost thought I was hearing Van Halen with Cherone again.

By the way, I was hoping you'd get a chance to hear this one, as you were surprised to hear Dokken was still together when we had lunch over the holidays. Cheers, man!
